Rising EV Adoption Makes Charging Stations Pakistan’s New Investment Hotspot
KARACHI – The steady increase in electric vehicle (EV) numbers across Pakistan is rapidly transforming the EV charging station sector into an emerging business opportunity. Experts draw parallels with the early days of the CNG sector, where early investors reaped significant rewards, suggesting that EV charging infrastructure could become a major business domain in the coming years.
Market sources indicate that approximately 300 new electric vehicles are being sold each month in Pakistan, with this number steadily rising, driving a sharp increase in demand for modern charging stations nationwide.
Experts note that while the charging station network is expanding in major cities, motorways, and northern tourist destinations, there remains substantial market capacity compared to current demand — presenting an attractive opportunity for investors .
The government is actively promoting EV infrastructure under its electric vehicle policy. National targets aim to establish approximately 3,000 EV charging stations across the country by 2030, with an initial 240 planned for the current fiscal year . The Sindh government has also set a target of installing 650 EV charging stations in the province.
The Power Division has recently introduced a significant 44 percent discount on electricity tariffs for EV charging stations, reducing rates from Rs71 per unit to Rs39.70 per unit as part of a broader strategy to promote electric mobility . Additionally, a subsidy of Rs9 billion has been allocated for the fiscal year to facilitate electric bikes and rickshaws .
Business experts say various financial models are available for investment in EV charging stations. Investors can choose between cash purchases, leasing, or revenue-sharing models based on their needs. Some companies are also offering business partnership opportunities for individuals with suitable commercial locations by installing charging stations under mutually agreed terms.
Experts advise that if an investor has a suitable commercial location or is looking for sustainable business opportunities for the future, EV charging infrastructure could prove to be a worthwhile investment
