University Road to Be 100% Motorable by September 15, Says Sharjeel Memon
KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said efforts are underway to make University Road 100% motorable by September 15 as construction work on the BRT Red Line project progresses.
He made the statement while speaking to the media during a visit to the under-construction Red Line BRT project in Karachi on Saturday. The minister was given a detailed briefing on progress, construction activities and work being carried out across different sections of the project.
Memon said construction was progressing rapidly and road carpeting had already been completed at several locations along University Road.
“Work is underway to make the entire University Road 100 per cent motorable by September 15,” he said.
The senior minister, who also holds the information, transport and mass transit portfolios, said work was also progressing rapidly on other sections of the Red Line, including the construction of bridges.
He said work on the Yellow Line project was also underway and the Sindh government was taking steps to improve public transport facilities for Karachi through BRT projects.
Memon said agreements had been signed for the purchase of 500 electric buses and orders had been placed. The buses would soon become available to Karachi residents, while motorcycles and scooters would also be provided to citizens shortly.
Acknowledging that Karachi still faced several challenges, the minister said the Sindh chief minister was holding daily meetings to address the city’s issues and personally monitoring development matters.
Memon described Karachi as one of Pakistan’s key economic centres and among the country’s highest tax-paying cities. He said the development of Karachi was directly linked to the development of Pakistan and called on the government, citizens and other stakeholders to play their respective roles in improving the city.
On the issue of new provinces, Memon said the PPP’s position was clear and that the Constitution provided a defined procedure for creating new provinces. He said the process required a resolution from the relevant provincial assembly and that decisions should reflect the will of the people through their elected representatives.
He also said street surveys could not replace the constitutional process for determining public opinion.
Speaking about airports and motorway development in Sindh, Memon said Hyderabad Airport had previously been operational but was now closed, while questions remained about other airports in the province.
He urged the federal government to pay greater attention to the construction of motorways and the development of airport infrastructure in Sindh, saying important decisions in these areas fell within the federal government’s jurisdiction.
