Federal Cabinet Approves Three-Council Local Government Structure for Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has approved a proposed new local government structure for Islamabad, under which the federal capital will be divided into three separate councils, each headed by its own mayor.

Under the proposed framework, each council will consist of 21 members. Women and minorities will also be given reserved representation in the general councils to ensure the participation of different segments of society in local governance.

The Islamabad Local Government Bill is scheduled to be presented before the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior on Thursday for consideration and approval.

Following approval by the standing committee, the bill will be placed before the National Assembly and Senate for formal passage.

The proposed system aims to restructure local governance in the federal capital and establish elected councils responsible for overseeing municipal services and other local matters.
