Islamabad Local Government Elections Challenged in High Court

ISLAMABAD: The December 20 local government elections in Islamabad have been challenged in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) over the legality of constituency delimitations.

Petitioner Chaudhry Amjad Ali has sought the annulment of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s October 21 order and election schedule, arguing that polls cannot be held until the legal status of the existing delimitations is settled.

The petition states that Islamabad’s local government institutions completed their tenure in February 2021, while the delimitation process has repeatedly been revised. The latest lists provide for 130 union councils under three town corporations, compared with 125 union councils under the previous framework.

The petitioner has urged the court to suspend the election process and order fresh, transparent delimitations in accordance with the law.
