Lahore union councils increase from 274 to 433 under new local government delimitation list

LAHORE: The District Election Commission Lahore has released the preliminary list of new union council delimitations for the upcoming local government elections, marking a significant expansion in the provincial capital’s local government structure. Under the new delimitations, the number of union councils in Lahore has been increased from 274 to 433, adding 159 new union councils to accommodate the city’s growing population and administrative needs.

According to the preliminary list issued by the Election Commission, the distribution of union councils across Lahore’s nine towns has been carefully reorganized. Ravi Town will have 52 union councils, while Shalimar Town leads with 72 union councils. Wagha Town has been allocated 25 union councils, and Model Town will have 77 union councils. Nishtar Town follows with 40 union councils, while Saddar Cantonment has been given 29 union councils. Raiwind City will have 32 union councils, Lahore City has been allocated 69 union councils, and Allama Iqbal Town will have 37 union councils under the new delimitation plan.

The Election Commission has announced that citizens and stakeholders can submit their objections and suggestions regarding the proposed delimitations until June 23. This period allows for public feedback to ensure that the delimitation process remains transparent and inclusive. Following the review of any objections or suggestions received, the final list of union council delimitations will be issued on August 10.

Officials have stated that the primary objective of this significant expansion is to make local government representation more effective and responsive to the needs of Lahore’s growing population. The new delimitations take into account demographic changes, urban development patterns, and administrative requirements across different parts of the city. By increasing the number of union councils from 274 to 433, the government aims to bring governance closer to the grassroots level and ensure better service delivery to residents across all neighborhoods of Lahore.

This major overhaul of the local government delimitation structure reflects the rapid population growth and urban expansion that Lahore has experienced in recent years. As Pakistan’s second-largest city and the capital of Punjab province, Lahore has seen significant development across its peripheral areas, including Raiwind, Wagha, and other suburban zones. The creation of 159 new union councils is expected to address long-standing concerns about inadequate representation in rapidly growing communities.

The local government elections are anticipated to be held later this year once the delimitation process is fully finalized. Political parties and local candidates have already begun preparing for the upcoming elections, with the new union council boundaries expected to reshape the political landscape of the city. The increased number of union councils will provide more opportunities for local leadership to emerge and for communities to have their voices heard in municipal decision-making.

Residents of Lahore have welcomed the move, expressing hope that the expanded union council system will lead to improved sanitation, better infrastructure maintenance, more efficient waste management, and enhanced delivery of public services at the neighborhood level. The local government system remains a crucial tier of governance for addressing day-to-day civic issues that directly impact citizens’ quality of life.
