Punjab Food Department Dismisses Food Inspector in Bahawalnagar Wheat Scandal Over Corruption and Smuggling Charges

Chishtian: The Punjab Food Department has dismissed Food Grains Inspector Waseem Talha after an official inquiry found him guilty of corruption, wheat smuggling, abuse of authority, and violations of government procurement policies in the high-profile Bahawalnagar wheat scandal.

According to an official dismissal order issued by the Deputy Director Food, Bahawalpur, the inquiry established that the officer misused his authority while overseeing anti-hoarding operations in Chishtian, Minchinabad, and Bahawalnagar.

Investigators found that wheat seized during enforcement operations, which was supposed to be transported to government procurement centers, was allegedly sold to local flour mills at higher prices in violation of official policy, resulting in personal financial gain.

The inquiry further alleged that after sealing warehouses during anti-hoarding operations, the official later colluded with hoarders and allowed the sale of confiscated wheat. The report also claimed he maintained close links with local flour mill owners, wheat traders, and commission agents, facilitating the illegal transportation and smuggling of wheat.

According to the findings, wheat was supplied to several flour mills, including Meezan Flour Mills in Chishtian, before being transported to other divisions, particularly Rawalpindi, contrary to departmental regulations.

Officials also stated that the accused attempted to conceal evidence by sealing empty warehouses after the wheat had already been moved elsewhere, undermining the Punjab government’s anti-hoarding campaign and food security policy.

The department confirmed that a show-cause notice had been issued and the officer was given an opportunity to respond. However, after reviewing documentary evidence, witness statements, and the findings of the departmental inquiry, the competent authority ordered his dismissal from service with immediate effect.
